Dela Scharff

Dela was a student in the Practice Oriented Research Lab under the mentorship of Dr. James Boswell from 2018-2023. After graduating from Haverford College, she worked as a research assistant in the Mood and Cognition Lab at Temple University and at The Renfrew Center of Philadelphia studying eating disorder treatment. She did her internship at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Dela's research interests include moderators of successful psychological intervention in routine practice, the intersections of race and psychotherapy, and therapist training and career development. Dela spends her spare time with her two dogs, Sasha and CJ, as well as cooking, playing volleyball, and eating cheese.

Brittany King (Iles)

Brittany was a student in the lab from 2016-2022. She completed her predoctoral internship at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan. Before her graduate training, she received her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and subsequently worked at Boston Children’s Hospital and McLean Hospital as a research assistant. She developed a strong interest in psychotherapy research while at UMASS Amherst and McLean Hospital, and has continued this work in the Practice-Oriented Research Lab. Her research interests include psychotherapy processes and mechanisms of change, therapist technique and intervention use, and psychotherapy integration. Brittany is completing her postdoctoral fellowship at McLean Hospital’s Klarman Eating Disorders Center. Her hobbies include running, reading, and different types of needlework (e.g. cross-stitch, embroidery).

Carly Schwartzman

Carly was a student in the Practice Oriented Research Lab under the mentorship of Dr. Boswell from 2016-2022. Prior to her graduate training, Carly received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Miami and completed a postbaccalaureate research assistantship in the OCD Research Program at Butler Hospital in Providence, RI. Following her graduate training, Carly completed her predoctoral internship at the James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bronx, NY, and her postdoctoral fellowship at the MindWell Center in Albany, NY. Her research interests focus on the intersection of psychotherapy and technology, as both an intervention modality and measurement tool. Specifically, she is interested in how interpersonal processes, alliance formation, multicultural orientation, and therapeutic outcomes develop effectively within a telepsychotherapy environment. Furthermore, she is interested in the use of technological devices (e.g., sensors) and software (e.g., NLP) to measure interpersonal processes within psychotherapy. Overall, she is passionate about studying alternative avenues for mental healthcare delivery that improve accessibility for marginalized communities. In her free time, Carly enjoys skiing, baking, and travel

Matteo was a student in the lab from 2014-2020. Prior to grad school, he received a B.A. in psychology from The City College on New York, CUNY, where he worked with Dr. Paul Wachtel, and as a research assistant for Dr. Denise Hien’s Trauma and Addiction Project.  He then obtained a M.A. in psychology from Boston University working as a research assistant for Dr. Michael Otto’s Translational Research Program at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders. Before entering University at Albany’s Ph.D. program, Matteo worked as a residential counselor at McLean Hospital’s transitional residential program located in Lincoln, MA. His research interests include: measurement-based care in mental and behavioral health, process and outcomes of psychological interventions, evidence-based practice training and implementation, and science-practice integration.

Jennifer was a student in the lab from 2014-2020. Prior to grad school, she studied psychology and art history at Williams College and worked as a research coordinator for the Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai (Icahn School of Medicine).  Her research interests include the dissemination and implementation of evidence based practices/empirically supported treatments and the use of technology to deliver and measure psychotherapy processes.
